Legislative Updates from Rep. Ozinga

Things have been ramping up in Springfield for the past few weeks. May marks the final month of session for 2023, with session adjourning on May 19th.

This means I, along with my colleagues in the General Assembly, will be working overtime to vote on hundreds of critical bills that will impact the lives of Illinois residents.

I do not take my responsibility as a State Representative lightly, and voting on bills is one of the most important parts of this job. I will continue to act in the best interest of the people of District 37 through the votes I cast in Springfield.

Emerging Women Leaders Event

Last month, I welcomed Margie Doorn and Christine LaVine to the Emerging Women Leaders Event in Springfield. The event consisted of a brunch, a listening session with Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, and the chance to sit in on a legislative session from the Speaker’s Gallery.

Nearly 50 women from across the state attended this event. The group also spent time discussing what issues are important to the women of Illinois and how the General Assembly can remedy those issues through policy.

Margie Doorn and Christine LaVine are both from Mokena, IL. Together, they co-founded Journey Pregnancy and Life Hub, and Journey Goods. Their organization offers a free and confidential space for pregnant women who may seek counseling, life coaching, or pregnancy and baby resources.

Both Margie and Christine are incredible women who formed a unique space for other women who may need emotional support during pregnancy. It was an honor to welcome them to our State Capitol as recognition for all they have accomplished in the development of their organization.

Summer Reading Program

This summer marks the beginning of my first Summer Reading Program!

Beginning on June 1st, students from kindergarten to 5th grade are invited to participate in this program.

As a father, I have seen firsthand how reading skills can regress during the summer months. It can be hard to keep children engaged with reading, which is why I am launching my summer reading program. This program is a fun way to get kids excited about reading and rewards them for completing eight books.

Any student who submits a completed form before August 1st will be invited to an end-of-summer ice cream event.

Open House

I am pleased to invite all residents to an open house at my district office. I will be available to answer questions from local residents and district office staff will be on-hand to help with issues residents may be facing concerning state agencies. Light refreshments will be provided

Date: May 22

Time: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Location: 11019 Front St, Suite 1W, Mokena

Internship Program Applications – Now Open!

I am excited to announce that this summer I will be hiring interns to work in my district office in Mokena.

Interns will be able to attend events, help with constituent outreach, assist with event planning, and more. The program also contains an educational component that includes weekly Zoom programs detailing different aspects of staff roles and the operations of the Illinois General Assembly.

Working alongside myself and the district staff is a great learning experience for any student with an interest in state-level government.
